There was a mob scene last week around the New England Pottery booth at the Mid-Atlantic Nurserymen's Trade Assn (MANTS) show in Baltimore -- everybody was ooh-ing and aah-ing over the new solid wood trellises and arbors from Matthews Four Seasons. These definitely have a stylish leg up on what you normally find in garden centers and gift shops. According to Matthews, they can be used indoors as well as outdoors -- perhaps even as room dividers -- and well, why not?
This one, Windgate, is said to have Southern flavor. Camden, (right) is the rustic country version. Other designs have a Mediterranean or Asian flavor, and there's even one that reflects American Bungalow style.
This Zen arbor lends itself to a garden that's perhaps on the modern side, or one with a very simple Eastern-inspired design. Check out the inserts on the side of the arbor, as well.
The trellises and arbors are manufactured from solid cedar and finished with a heartwood stain that is said to increase the product's resistance to decay, insects, and harsh weather. They can be mounted on walls or fences or be anchored into the ground. The trellises are available throughout the US at home center stores and independent nurseries. Arbors are available in most markets, so check your local garden center or contact www.matthewsfourseasons.com
